Somatic & EMDR Approaches

Calming the Nervous System

Panic attacks are brief episodes of extreme fear. They may be mistaken for heart attacks or strokes, but are psychological and neurological rather than cardiac. Panic attacks can occur suddenly, usually peak within 10 minutes, and typically end within 20 to 30 minutes.

When a person has had at least two panic attacks and lives in constant dread of having another, they may have panic disorder. A panic attack can happen without an obvious cause, and individuals may begin developing avoidance patterns or phobias related to associated triggers—including open spaces, highway driving, or crowded places.

In my practice, panic disorder is treated through a combination of talk therapy, mindfulness calming techniques, breathing exercises, and EMDR desensitization. Patients are also encouraged to adopt supportive lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and avoiding stimulants.
